In 1959 EJL & Chris went by boat (SS Canton's last voyage) to work in SIndia, by invitation of the Dornakal Diocese of the Church of SIndia, & sponsored by Methodist Church UK.
To be of service in very different social/economic/religious context, long & intense acculturation needed, esp learning the main local language, Telugu.
Bangalore graduate Revd Kasala Ratnam, having vowed to live as a Sadhu, was their Mentor. From the Dalit (once 'Outcaste') community, his gentle manner was attractive to all - Hindu, Muslim, Christian, not aiming to change people's community/cultural identity.
