EJL joined his father & brother in farming Lane Barton's 170 acres, 1949-56 (+ vacations 56-59). EJL suggested setting up their Guernsey herd in 1949 (from 6 cows, this became 90+). As organic farm, in early yrs much work was manual. Market town Bideford, on the River Torridge, was 10 miles East. Cricket continued: 1st for North Devon Cricket Club, Instow - with its 1836 Pavilion, then with Woolsery village team, started up by EJL & Brother. He also often went out with shotgun, for rabbits & occasional Woodcock or Teal (all later regretted).
