With Mrs Marjorie Griffiths as primary teacher EJL began well. Then, aged 7-10 (of which 2 yrs with 14-yr olds) after frequent clashes with teachers, was asked to move to another school. Games etc that enjoyed: Marbles, Conkers, Leap-the-gap, Tag, Bird-nesting, Armies, Strong Horses.
At secondary school EJL enjoyed sport & most subjects studied, but homesick in early yrs, & did not enjoy the bottom-beatings ('scats'). Left school at just 15 to work on farm, with final comment from Head: 'Fine record in studies & sport, but lacks intellectual curiosity'
