The BD degree at London was a different kind of challenge after 7 yrs on the farm. But life at Richmond College (Methodist) was fun, with more singing, cricket & a little rugger along with Hebrew, Greek and suchlike. EJL became precentor, choir-master, missionary secretary, & 'bishop' of Hyde Park mission group (a futile ambition to be young Donald Sopers!). Fun too was being soloist (Lindy Lou; Ol' Man River; When a Maiden takes your fancy etc), in the College Concert Party. Some classes were at King's College, the Strand, where Ninian Smart's teaching on World Religions influenced EJL for life. Meeting Christine Goddard of Southlands College was even more momentous! The college, established 1843, closed in 1972, and became the Richmond, The American International University in London.
